Modern sterilization equipment has come a long way since it’s invention in 1879, when microbiologist Charles Chamberland first started the research project that lead to the invention of the autoclave. Today, we have a number of manufacturers producing quality equipment for medical, laboratory or research purposes. In this article we’ll cover some of stronger companies in the market.

Tuttnauer has produced sterilization equipment since 1925. With operations in more than 100 countries, it’s not biggest company in the market but one with a strong reputation. The Tuttnauer 1730 Valueklave comes in stainless steel grey. The door handle is a hard plastic that is thermo-insulated. The control panel features a simple minimalist design with 3 easily adjustable valves for adjusting temperature, time and programming. 2 liter volume.
Normal operating conditions are as follows:
- Altitude up to 2000m.
- Minimum room temperature 41ºF (5ºC).
- Installation Category II.
- Pollution Degree 2.
- Maximum relative humidity 80% for temperature up to 31ºC decreasing linearly to 50% relative humidity at 40ºC.
- Mains supply voltage fluctuations up to ±10% of nominal voltage.
- The sterilizer should be loaded only with autoclavable material.
Although pricey, the Tuttnauer 2540M is fast and reliable. Featuring A two layer safety mechanism for locking the door and much more space than the smaller 1730 model. But the extra internal space comes with increased external dimensions and weight. However, same minimalist and easy to use control panel. 6 liter volume.

A simple 4.7 gallon steam autoclave with a maximum pressure of 0.15MPa. Made of stainless steel much like other models on this list, but it stands out with the ability to be heated by not just electricity but also directly. For longevity of the machine a safety mechanism exists to prevent dry burning.
All in all a reasonably priced device.
This 6.25 gallon non-electric sterilizer is made of aluminium. It’s simple in design but with proper precautions will pressure sterilize what you need. No excessive parts that might need to get replaced eventually. A reasonably priced workhorse for doctors, dentists, hospitals, laboratories and first aid stations.
Approved by the organisation formerly known as Underwriters Laboratories. Like all models so far in this list it comes with multiple valves to pressure control.
If you want to stick with All American, but are looking for an electric model, then the WAF Electric 6.825 gallon pressure sterilizer is for you. With the exception of how it’s powered and the slight increase in volume it’s essentially the same machine as the All-American 25 Quart Non-Electric Sterilizer.
Getinge, founded in Sweden in 1904, has a long history with medical technology much like Tuttnauer. But they operate at a different scale as their market capitalization is at $4.9 billion. Their product line does not include autoclaves for small scale operations. However, if you’re looking for washer-disinfectors for large scale operations like hospitals than Getinge may be the option for you.
Much like Getinge, Steris offers a variety of medical hardware. The company is US based and youngest so far in this list. Founded in 1985, but made up of much older companies. Steris trades at a $6.9 billion valuation.
Steris offers steam sterilizers for medium and large operations but lacks products for a local mom and pop shop.
The Bottom Line
You can’t go wrong with Tuttnauer. They are pricey but offer high quality and aesthetically pleasing craftsmanship in return. But if you simply want the job done then less prestigious companies like All American and Baoshisan will get the job done. Just make sure that your operating conditions are normal. That you do not live at a high altitude which might mean that you require a more powerful machine.
