Why should I exercise?
Below you will find some practical reasons and scientific reasons for exercising.
The Fun Reason
For men an important motivator is simply being more competitive. Counter-intuitively you will have more energy and more cognitive ability to deal with everyday problems big or small. You will learn, think and react faster than a man who doesn’t.
If you’re a woman the same reasons apply but a big motivator for women is simply the enhancement or maintenance of appearance or health. You will be more beautiful than you would be without exercise. Whether man or woman it probably helps to think that your butt will look great if you do those squats.
Studies show that women judge men by socioeconomic status and that men judge women based on appearance and socioeconomic status has little importance. This is not a hard rule but it is common.
Overall, if you want to increase your reproductive success you should exercise.
If you want to be happy, you should exercise. Even getting ice cream requires you to move physically. Even sleeping is enhanced if you’re a physically active person. If you want anything, absolutely anything then exercise probably is a good first step in getting that thing.
The Boring Reason
Physical exercise enhances and maintains physical and mental health. It prevents cancer, builds muscle, boosts the immune system and cognitive performance. It may aid sleep and has antidepressant effects.
In healthy adults, aerobic exercise has been shown to induce transient effects on cognition after a single exercise session and persistent effects on cognition following regular exercise over the course of several months. People who regularly perform aerobic exercise (e.g., running, jogging, brisk walking, swimming, and cycling) have greater scores on neuropsychological function and performance tests that measure certain cognitive functions, such as attentional control, inhibitory control, cognitive flexibility, working memory updating and capacity, declarative memory, spatial memory, and information processing speed. The transient effects of exercise on cognition include improvements in most executive functions (e.g., attention, working memory, cognitive flexibility, inhibitory control, problem solving, and decision making) and information processing speed for a period of up to 2 hours after exercising.
How much should I exercise at the bare minimum?
“Primary Recommendation—To promote and maintain health, all healthy adults aged 18 to 65 yr need moderate-intensity aerobic (endurance) physical activity for a minimum of 30 min on five days each week or vigorous-intensity aerobic physical activity for a minimum of 20 min on three days each week. ” 
What kind of exercise?
“Combinations of moderate- and vigorous-intensity activity can be performed to meet this recommendation. For example, a person can meet the recommendation by walking briskly for 30 min twice during the week and then jogging for 20 min on two other days. Moderate-intensity aerobic activity, which is generally equivalent to a brisk walk and noticeably accelerates the heart rate, can be accumulated toward the 30-min minimum by performing bouts each lasting 10 or more minutes.
Vigorous-intensity activity is exemplified by jogging, and causes rapid breathing and a substantial increase in heart rate. In addition, every adult should perform activities that maintain or increase muscular strength and endurance a minimum of two days each week.
Because of the dose-response relation between physical activity and health, persons who wish to further improve their personal fitness, reduce their risk for chronic diseases and disabilities or prevent unhealthy weight gain may benefit by exceeding the minimum recommended amounts of physical activity. ”
